Back to (Commenting) Basics

If this ongoing deluge of public changes to Brand New is as painful as for you as it is for me, I do apologize for any inconveniences or annoyances, but sometimes you don’t know how things will actually work even if you test them to the best of your abilities. So, the new commenting system seems to be causing a few more problems than I would like. Mainly, sometimes they show, sometimes they don’t; sometimes the count will be “0 comments” but there are comments; most of the times if you navigate from one thread to another the comments do not refresh; and, as a reader from Malaysia pointed out, the comments do not work at all in any browser, which he thought might be a bigger ban on this comment system.

So… We are reverting back to the old comment style without the “reply” feature, which was indeed nice. But… there is one small change: You will need to register/sign in to be able to comment. This serves two purposes, one it deters spam, which is a real problem; and, two, it deters drive-by commenting from readers that come here once usually to say how shallow we are for worrying about logos when there is global warming to be worrying about. Unless this old-new system somehow does not work, this is what we are going with.

Something was just not working right with the registration and other things. So, for old times’ sake, we are going back to the way things were: A wild west of commenting free-for-all and spam surveillance.

Sadly, the comments of the last few threads will be semi-lost. I have access to them, but they won’t show up on Brand New.

Update 1: Of course, something isn’t working with the registration. Stand by.

Update 2: Some setting somewhere is making things go stupid. It was working yesterday, damnit. Stand by. Long time.

Update 3: Commenting should be working again. But some other things are still wonky. Stand by hopefully for not too much longer.

Update 4: Things are even more screwed up than they were in the morning. So, you know what, come back tomorrow. Things should either be fine then or I have retired from blogging.
