One of the givens we had when we started planning the speaker line-up for the Brand New Conference was that we wanted someone to represent the fields of animation and motion graphics as they apply to identity and branding. Television is one of the greatest canvases for brand expression these days and the talented folks at Brand New School know how to work the medium. I’ve been a fan of their work for many years now and I’m delighted that founder Jonathan Notaro will be on deck. Following is another one of our brief Q&As with this year’s speakers.
Brand animation for the Sagmeister-designed EDP identity.
What can we expect from your talk?
Jonathan Notaro: A casual and candid observation of what we’ve been doing and how we work. By comparison to other guests I seem to represent the fringe of branding as we work more in the production field. We may show some process, share some work and stories.
FUEL TV on-air look.
What have you been doing the last year? Professionally speaking.
JN: We have been directing commercials, ad campaigns, and developing installations for clients such as Jack Daniel’s, Ikea, Honda, British Red Cross, BBC, Microsoft, Philips, Cadbury, Revlon, Coke, and Cartoon Network. We have also launched a new studio in London.
Jack Daniel’s Label Story: “Tennessee”.
Anything outside the conference that you are looking forward to seeing or doing in San Francisco?
JN: Grabbing some oysters at a notable place and hanging out.
Montage from Cartoon Network’s 2010 On-Air Brand Expansion.
Is there any particular speaker of the Brand New Conference you are excited to see?
JN: I’m excited to hear from the creative director of Wolff Olins, i like what they do.
Who would you invite to speak next year?
JN: I think all conferences could benefit from a little variety, so i would suggest someone who understands branding, but doesn’t necessarily practice it as a ritual. What about someone like Paul Smith or Simon Noonan?
