In Brief: Grilling is the New Frying

KFC Grilled

"In promoting the new grilled product, KFC plans to change 'Kentucky Fried Chicken' storefront signs to add grilled to the name. Chicken buckets will still feature KFC founder Harland Sanders but will get a redesign to promote fried and grilled chicken." Despite yesterday's shenanigans this much is true. Mark’s comment is:

Is that older sign or a newer one above? I can't tell I haven't seen a building sign with the full name in what seems like ages, since at least like 1995 (my local KFC still kept the abbreviated signage on the building after the recent changeover to full name).

anyway the name sounds kind of clunky to me, we'll see.

yeah, I'm not sure what to believe after the April Fools day thing (you should delete it), because quite frankly, the Ford logo was easier to believe than this.

General Critic’s comment is:

I can see this one not as a permanent change, but a short-term promotional gimmick.

Please tell me this is a joke.

That's all we need. The nanny-state minded marketing geeks screwing with branding and dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator.

What's next? Maybe this?

I'm with General-critic. While this would make a stupid permanent change; I think its a good idea for a temporary marketing push

Sigh. People, look at the published dates of the articles I linked too, both are before April 1. You can also try googleing for yourselves to make sure it's true. And if you were really clever you could even go poking around KFC's newsroom.

Chad K’s comment is:

The picture of the sign, if this is actually what they intend to do with them, is genius as far as marketing it. Using their own identity and simply adding an ampersand and word to get the point across. It's almost like a billboard on every KF(&G)C storefront.

Justin’s comment is:

Yes thats actually the new signage and storefront. My local KFC recently built a new location and it has Kentucky Fried Chicken on the building. But I guess soon it will say Kentucky Fried & Grilled Chicken. (I agree thought, it just doesnt sound right)

Prescott Perez-Fox’s comment is:

Remember when Boston Market was called Boston Chicken? Maybe the solution is for KFC to become Kentucky Market. Or perhaps , Kentucky Chicken, Colonel Sanders, or something entirely new. The new name is crowbarred at best, and in the case of signage, looks like it has literally been duct taped in place. Not the best strategy for a global brand.

Christopher Toler’s comment is:

I would agree with Prescott... "Kentucky Chicken" would be much catchier and easier to say/remember/tolerate than "Kentucky Fried & Grilled Chicken" (say that five times... at all), and might go a long way toward helping their grilled varieties become more accepted by the customers, even if it is just a subliminal effect. (I mean, come on, would you want grilled from a place whose very name suggests they're better at fried?)

Although, Chad has a point that the signage is genius. Instead of attempting a rather forced-feeling integration of the name, it's kind of a glorified Post-It note, like... "And GRILLED, too!" Chintzy? Sure. Eye-catching? Yoobetcha.

Grilling the chicken after it's fried makes it healthier; and twice as delicious.

The Ghost Of Colonel Sanders’s comment is:

Next year they'll add Baked. Then Poached. And you guessed it: KF&G&B&PC. Perfect for text-addicts. Just drop the "Fried" in the batter and become Kentucky Chicken already.

Jay’s comment is:

Maybe they should lose the Kentucky as well. Don't want to offend anyone from out of state.

Let us just call it "CHICKEN!"

Prescott Perez-Fox’s comment is:

Anecdote warning:

My sister was recently on the campaign trail in Iowa and complained immensely about how all the food out there is fried by default. (America, Fuck Yea!). After a week of searching in vain for something semi-healthy, she and her crew discovered "Broasted Chicken" on the room service menu. A quick call to the kitchen revealed that Broasted is basically just fried.

Kentucky Broasted Chicken for the win.

DevonTT’s comment is:

Is that sign for real? That's... unbelievably bad. Why don't they just change their name to "The Colonel's"? Everybody knows the Colonel represents chicken. Promote the grilled chicken options like crazy and let nature take its course. But messing with the name like that isn't going to retool the brand into a healthier image. It just makes "grilled" look like the afterthought it is.
