In Brief: The Dharma Initiative

The Dharma Initiative

The first season of Lost came when we made the decision to not have Cable TV or even rabbit ears to catch the networks so I completely missed the boat (ha! get it?) on that one. I'm sure, had circumstances been different, I would be a devout follower of the series and completely geeked out about a rebranding happening within the show. Jamison Wieser, a Brand New reader, explains the brand mysteries behind the Dharma Initiative for you, Brand New style.

LOST! The best ever. Definitely worth getting into before the 5th season. It's doable since it doesn't start until January. Do it.

It's interesting, because seeing the show, the logo can stand within two contexts. The first: the Dharma Initiative was destroyed in a purge in the early 70s, and this logo revitalization has been crafted recently to restore the organization. The second: the Dharma Initiative has been around this entire time, and has endured many logo developments. I still love the old logo, because of what it represented. But, I'll have to say, the new one is just as creepy, in an overly nicely-nicey-contemporary-corporate-kind-of-way.

You mean Lost is just a sneaky way to bring back Dharma and Greg?

As far as naming goes, LOST certainly is a stroke of genius. Every time I watch it the name makes more sense.

Their new branding doesn't seem to quite hit the mark. The type strikes me as too large for the space it inhabits and the letterspacing too...maybe too loose, maybe too tight...not quite right. Needs further exploration.

I also think the ba gua is not quite right though I'm certainly inspired by the treatment.

AW’s comment is:

Lost must have a full-time designer, as there are quite a few logos sprinkled throughout the show - not only the various DHARMA logos but those of dozens of other fictional products as well. Aren't we lucky that fans collect all this stuff for us.

Jamison Wieser’s comment is:

AW mentions something I didn't touch on: how does the new brand play out across all the individual station/project logos? Though having lost the island, the DHARMA Initiative may no longer continue the tradition of developing individual logos for each research project. Given they were not recruiting for individual projects, and just for DHARMA overall, that could be the case.

Other than the type, this is actually pretty awesome. Thanks for the link AW.
