About

(Est. 1941) “The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit, Michigan. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team plays its home games at Little Caesars Arena and was founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana as the Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons in 1941, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL). The Pistons joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948. In 1949, the NBL and BAA merged to become the NBA, and the Pistons became part of the merged league. Since moving to Detroit in 1957, the Pistons have won three NBA championships in 1989, 1990 and 2004.” (Wikipedia)

Relevant quote
Dating back to our move from Fort Wayne to the Motor City in 1957, the iconic Detroit Pistons brand has always stayed true. The bold red, white and blue color scheme and basketball icon have withstood the test of time through the evolution of the franchise and the city. And now that a new chapter is being written, that evolution continues with a new identity built on the Pistons championship tradition and promising future. It will serve as a badge of honor for our players on the court, fans in the community and everyone that is part of the Detroit Pistons family.

Opinion

The old logo corrected the 9-year blip and abomination that was the horse and exhaust pipe logo from the Grant Hill era. It corrected it but it wasn’t that great either, evolving the perspective typography into a flat version that, mostly, corroborated how sucky that type was. But it made an effort by bringing back the limited key colors and reverting to a basketball. The new logo digs deeper into the archives to revive the Bad Boys-era logo — which is an acceptable and good idea — but then it messes it up by sticking with the same typography as before. Sure, it’s simplified and cleaned up but, again, it corroborates what a poor typographic foundation has been there for more then 20 years. These needless spikes have gotten worse over the years and, between this one and the Trailblazers’ new logo, the NBA is 0 for 2 on new wordmarks for the 2017 – 18 season.

Thanks to Ty Blits for the tip.
