About

(Launching 2015, currently playing in the USL Pro league) “Orlando City SC is an upcoming American professional soccer team based in Orlando, Florida that will compete in Major League Soccer (MLS). Orlando City SC was announced as the league’s twenty-first franchise on November 19, 2013. The team’s expansion rights were purchased by Brazilian businessman Flavio Augusto da Silva and Phil Rawlins, owners of the USL Pro Orlando City Soccer Club. The club intends to begin playing in the 2015 MLS season alongside the twentieth franchise New York City FC. Orlando City SC will be the first MLS franchise located in the state of Florida since the Miami Fusion F.C. and Tampa Bay Mutiny folded following the 2001 Major League Soccer season.” (Source: Wikipedia)

Relevant quote
The color purple has become a highly recognizable feature for Orlando City over the years. Employed as the club's primary color, purple distinguishes Orando City from any other club in the North American soccer landscape.

Remaining as the central focal point of the logo, is the Lion, indicating strength and pride. The King of the Jungle reflects Orlando City's successful tenure in USL PRO and reluctance to shy away from an opponent.

The logo is also symbolic of a new beginning for Orlando City. The 21 sun flares bordering the Lion signifies the club being named MLS' 21st franchise in November of 2014.

The sun is emblematic of a new goal for Orlando City. With Florida being widely known as the Sunshine State, the integration of the sun in the new logo describes OCSC's aspiration to become the team that not only represents the City of Orlando but also the State of Florida.

Lots of fans waxing poetic about their team, followed by an unfortunate 3D rendering of the logo.

Opinion

When it comes to lion-based crests I definitely prefer single-headed lions than triple-headed lions — this is a stance I have held for as long as I can remember. So the new logo is more to my liking. It's a decent drawing, perhaps a little dead in the eyes but I think it works. The mane/rays of sunshine having 21 spikes in honor of being the 21st expansion team is a nice nod to reality. The typography is a little messy with the cuts in the letters and the "A" cutting in only on the "N" but not the "L" and the "T" is just plain awkward.

Thanks to Gabe Shultz for the tip.
