Will the Real Waratah Please Stand Up?
In other Australian news, the Government of New South Wales has released a new logo based on the state’s floral emblem, the waratah. The problem is, according to leading botanists and the public at large, that the logo depicts not a waratah but a lotus — and with a reported (staggering, OMG) price of $A4,600 (US$3,750) everybody feels robbed. The NSW Government web site shows the new logo and this story is the most complete. But it doesn’t end there. DesignBay, an Australian logo crowdsourcer, decided to offer up $A1,000 (US$815) for anyone that can design a better waratah logo. I guess a simple, boring wordmark wouldn’t be the most wrong way to go, huh?

Granted, they should’ve gotten the flower correct, but $3750 is not a lot for a logo.

I agree - flower should have been correct - this logo looks so similar to other brands - it’s not unique at all.

This still makes me angry to see…esp with the stimulus package and every school in NSW sporting this logo on their construction zones. Its ludicrously simplified and far from a realistic - did the designer even bothered to look at a waratah? Cant we have back the old one please? At least it had some sense of dignity. Dont even get me started on the type - the W errr! Welcome to the 80’s NSW…

Instead of sitting on the couch yelling out “it’s a f…king lotus!” I decided to check for a forum on the NSW lotus emblem. All I can think is that a person of Asian heritage drew the design and was influenced by their cultural background. Really, a waratah design could be found without paying all that money for a lotus.

Anyone who has designed for a Government Department would see that price as cheap.
Besides, any comment on the total price seems a bit naive without knowing the extent of the whole process. I’d expect a bit more from this site.
