2012 Brand New Awards: Designers’ Deadline Addiction

Last Thursday, when the entry count for the Brand New Awards was at 529, we had sort of given up hope that we were going to improve on last year’s tally of 598 and that we might even not break the total of the first BNAs of 547. But our deadline-loving industry came through on the very last day for submissions with 185 entries in 24 hours, accounting for almost 26% of all 714 total entries. So I did a quick little chart (shown below or after the jump) of how many entries came in on the three deadline days — Feb.1 (for early-bird), March 1 (for first deadline), and March 15 (for final) — how many came in on the day before the deadline, and how many on the days in between. This, of course, reveals nothing new. Designers love leaving things to the last minute where any project or task, no matter how boring, can be as thrilling and clock-ticking-down-exciting as an episode of 24.

The final deadline for the Brand New Awards is this Friday, March 15, 2013. You have all day and night Friday to complete the online submission form, which will be closed Saturday morning. Mailed-in entries must arrive by Monday or Tuesday of next week at the latest.

There will be no further extensions and no exceptions made to late entrants past the deadline.

The deadline to complete the online submission form and/or receive your physical entries for the 2012 Brand New Awards has been extended to Friday, March 15, 2013.

Please note: This is the one and only extension. No entries — no matter how much you procrastinate — will be accepted after March 15. No exceptions. Judging takes place March 22 and we need a full week to process everything.

The 2012 Brand New Awards are now open and accepting entries.

Submission process can all be completed online. Shipping printouts and actual samples is optional. (Your entries are still going to be printed and judged in person).

2011 Brand New Awards, Pre-Order

After a slight delay on our part, the 2011 Brand New Awards book is now in stock. We are still finishing up a proper storefront and photographing the book so all we have to convince you is the preview video above. In the meantime, we are going to have a short pre-order period until Wednesday October 17 with 20% off the retail price of $34.99 (so a total of $27.99 right now). Pre-orders will start shipping at the end of next week.

Brand New Awards, Coming January 2012

A quick announcement to let you know that the 2011 Brand New Awards call for entries will open the first week of January and will run through a deadline of March 2. The categories will remain the same as last year so start thinking about what you might want to enter. We have our five confirmed judges and we are very excited about this year’s line-up. We are currently working on the online submission process which we are hoping will improve on last year’s positively received method. And we will be encouraging electronic upload of entries as opposed to mail-ins to reduce shipping costs. Stay tuned for the launch at the start of 2012.

Brand New Awards, International Distribution

I’m hoping to get a little bit of help from our international readers: We would like to find distributors — design-centric bookstores, organizations, and/or stores — that would be interested in distributing the 2010 Brand New Awards book. At this point our international distribution is limited by the fact that it’s so expensive to send overseas and I think many people hate the thought of paying almost half of the price of the book (plus the book) for shipping. If we could get bulks of them to you locally, then we all win. So we are looking for two things: if you are a consumer, suggestions of which stores you think would be appropriate for the book, or any other ideas of how you usually get design books; or if you happen have an outlet for selling them, contact us for terms and pricing.

Since we are in it for the long-term we want to make sure that everyone has the best possible access to the annual books. Thanks for any help or insight you might have.
