Today we go full on Nordic with firms and clients from Denmark and Norway and an aesthetic that you just can’t get either on this side of the pond or even in other parts of that side of the pond. What I’m trying to say: They got serious design skills up there.
Established in 1949 in the city of Rybinsk in Russia, Rybinskkabel is one of the country’s leading producers of cable with 2,500 employees and more than 16,000 kinds of cable and wires with copper and aluminum conductors. With its origins in Soviet Union-era Russia and current new management it was time to bring Rybinskkabel into the twenty-first century with the help of a new identity designed by Moscow-based Nile.
This edition is inspired by the arrival of the 2011 Brand New Awards book on American soil from its printing in China. It’s still a few days before arrival at UCllc headquarters but it’s coming. It’s really coming, people! (We were slow on our end, which is why the book wasn’t ready in August like last year). Proof is in the first picture below (or after the jump); dig the laser-cut cover. Anyway: three winners from the book are liked this Friday.
Located in the Northern coast of California, Sonoma County is one of the most well-known wine-grape-growing, wine-producing, and wine-consuming regions not just in the United States but around the world. Boasting 13, the most in the U.S., American Viticultural Areas — official regions with boundaries defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the United States Department of the Treasury — Sonoma County is home to 1,800 grape growers and 350 wineries across 60,000-plus acres of awesome land. But nowadays pretty much every city and country has its very own “Wine Country” and Sonoma County was feeling the competition or, put more officially, “there is more pressure than ever before to strengthen the presence of Sonoma County and its AVAs among world-class wine regions” so three of the county’s leading organizations — Sonoma County Vintners, Sonoma County Winegrape Commission, and Sonoma County Tourism Bureau — banded together to create an official destination brand as well as a national campaign to “build awareness through communications and promotion that will keep the Sonoma County brand visible and relevant, ensuring that every winery, grower, and our region as a whole benefits from the power of our brand.” The identity has been designed by Landor.
Established in 2006, Coyote Logistics is a third party logistics and transportation, meaning that they accommodate shipments with a variety of carriers, finding trucks that have available space in trips they are already making. According to Inc. magazine, which listed Coyote as the No. 1 company in Logistics and Transportation, it has had a 13,846.8% three-year growth. Coyote counts with over 300 employees and an aggressive (in a friendly way) attitude. This past Fall they introduced a new identity designed by Moving Brands.
Established in 1984 in Barcelona, Mango is an international fashion brand for women and men with fun, friendly, accessible clothing. While they have a small presence in the U.S. they are very well known in Europe. Mango currently operates over 2,000 stores in 105 countries and counts with more than 8,000 employees. I remember there being a store in Mexico City and it used to be geared towards a younger demographic but it seems like they have upped the age range and have introduced a new logo that is aimed at a more mature audience. The new logo was designed in-house.
Established in 2004, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is the first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization in the U.S. for veterans of its most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its mission is to “improve the lives of this country’s newest generation of veterans and their families.” IAVA counts with 200,000 members — membership is free as they note that its members have “already paid [their] dues in Iraq and Afghanistan.” This week IAVA introduced a new identity designed pro bono by Landor.
First played in 1975, the International Cricket Council (IIC) Cricket World Cup is the most notable tournament in the world of cricket played every four years. The 2011 Cup, played in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh just finished with India taking the championship. The logo for the 2015 IIC Cricket World Cup, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, was presented this week. The identity was designed by the Australia office of Futurebrand who commissioned Jumbana Group/Balarinji for the logo. Press release here. Bigger view here.
Update April 4, 2011: This post is an April Fools. All the design was executed by the talented Matt Stevens. Links to the domain www.myhomedepot.us won’t work as I have released the domain back to the registry. This is what www.homedepot.us looked like on Friday.
Established in 1978 with two 60,000-square-feet stores in Atlanta, GA, and stocking up to 25,000 different SKUs at the time, Home Depot is the world’s largest home improvement retailer, the fourth largest retailer in the U.S., it is ranked number 29 in the Fortune 500, and let’s face it, one of the coolest chain stores ever. Seriously. Where else can you walk out with a bag of screws, a door, and a riding mower? These days, Home Depot has 1,972 stores in the U.S., Canada, China, and Mexico. Each store averages a whopping 105,000 square feet plus an average of 23,000 square feet for the outside garden area. Quite amazingly too, for a retailer of that size, every employee on the floor I have ever asked a question to has been friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful — and I’ve been to a Home Depot in Brooklyn on a Sunday, they are unflappable. This week a picture surfaced on Twitter that indicated a new logo was being tested and, today, that change has been confirmed with the unveiling of a new logo and updated identity system.
I have never been to Taiwan so you will be spared of any personal recollections today. Located in Eastern Asia, Taiwan is a small island that the Central Intelligence Agency compares in size to the combined square milage of the states of Delaware and Maryland — while there is a combined 6 million people in those two, there are 23 million people in Taiwan. In 2010, Taiwan reportedly had 5 million visitors but it seems they want more. Earlier this month, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau introduced a new identity, designed by London-based Winkreative (the brand agency of Monocle’s Tyler Brûlé), and a new slogan that replaces the awkward sounding “Taiwan, Touch Your Heart” for “Taiwan — The Heart of Asia.”
Headquartered in Norcross, GA, Alternative Apparel is a retailer and wholesaler of t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, leggings, etc., all with their “signature vintage softness.” The new logo was developed in-house.
