Voice Over is a publication “on staging, activism and performative strategies in contemporary art practices”, that was launched during the opening days of the 2009 Venice Biennale and distributed worldwide by Sternberg Press. This particular issue showcases the work of five different artists, one of which presented a circumstance best narrated by the designer:
One of them wanted to get the impression of photographs printed on mirrors. We achieved this with a new technique whereby you can print silver foil in an offset printing machine (The Heidelberg Foilmaster). Ekotryck in Sweden has one of these monster-machines, as we found out. We used this method for the insert — an 8-page foldout in the middle in a smaller size. The cover is also printed in this machine but with a grey pantone together with the silver foil, and a beige pantone on the inside of the cover.
So far I have only seen this foil technique printed once a few years back and I can say it is an amazing looking technique — hopefully they are working hard at making it more ecological since at that point it was not. The depth achieved in the foil is amazing and the overall feel is one to be remembered.
