For the ambitious inaugural triennial in Manchester of contemporary work from Asian artists, the organizers produced an equally ambitious printed exhibition book. The exposed spine, which is production technique on the rise, goes one step further by being printed in four fluorescent colors that define the different sections of the book. The fluorescent solids then seep into the inside margins for a lovely graded effect that accents the artwork inside it. And pulling this effect off was no easy feat:

As far as the spine goes, it was a real challenge to say the least. The spine had the four spot colours printed down it which did not necessarily co-ordinate with the spot fluros on the spreads so often the artwork had to be separated down the middle with the spot fluro for the spine added as a thin surge of 1.2 mm (0.05 in). This meant that many of the spreads were a 6 colour job requiring it to be passed through the printer twice which became a real headache. Once the spine had been sewn it also needed a clear glue to be added to ensure that it did not loosen itself over time, many of these ‘clear’ glues dried to a milky, matt finish meaning that the fluros failed to ‘pop’, so after some time our printers sourced us with an option which dried suitably. It was a really exhausting process which placed a great deal of strain on the printers, binders and ourselves feeding back to the client.
