In this third project by Another New Calligraphy the content of the book, which is a series of short fictions, drove the concept of breaking up the book into a series of minibooks and cards.
We found boxes made for reel-to-reel tapes and designed the cards to fit within them. Doing so necessitated rounding the corners of the cards, which had the added benefit of making them much more pleasing to the eye and professional looking. Considering that there are over thirty cards and booklets, and that we made fifty copies of the book, that entailed well over ten thousand uses of a sturdy little corner-rounder that amazingly never broke. Our hands almost did, but it was well worth it.
The artwork is inspired on the various mentions of sharks which were created with India Ink and crayons — later tweaked on he computer. Also, the general aim of the collection is to exist as some sort of strange, otherworldly newspaper, an idea that is played somewhat subdued in the exterior and interior pieces.
One card in particular was painted with “ketchup” at the behest of the author — this is the first release of ours to sell out, and I am positive it is exclusively the ketchup’s doing.
I am deeply intrigued by this project and how all of the stories come together, how the reader can enjoy them in unique personalized ways by approaching each on individually or the set as a whole.
