For the last decade Bill Ripley has been dreaming with starting a record label and printing press named Another New Calligraphy. With his wife Robyn Detterline by his side, the groundwork was set up for the creation, documentation and sharing of music and literature alongside handmade art and social consciousness. That is one tall order this couple has fully embraced:
A major element of Another New Calligraphy is honoring the tradition of tangible art objects that is sadly being forgotten by so many, tactile quality is a very important aspect of choosing materials for the releases. Everything but the CDs themselves is printed, cut, scored, folded, and glued by usn. There always seems to be a pile of something to do in our house, and we would hate to have it any other way.
Interspersed through the next five or so posts we will be covering three of their launching projects, starting by the book Kill Marguerite, by Megan Milks, which tells the story of a tormented young girl and her bullies surrealistically set within the confines and contrivances of a classic video game:
The author was eager to reflect the nostalgic aspect of the story in the book design, so I faked an 8-bit version of its characters, using an old photograph of my wife’s childhood friends as references. In addition to treating the title as some sort of vintage NES logo, I created internal illustrations and level screens, developing a way to break up sections of the story as though the reader was actually playing a game instead of reading a book.
Everything was printed using your everyday inkjet and laser printers we all deal with on a daily basis and hand bound with staples and hot glue.
