A booklet as class assignment, promotional piece, job seeker and ultimate teacher is here to show you how dedication to a cause--be it life altering, or a challenge to print--can end in beautiful results.

This project was designed as a promotional piece to be included in my mailers after I graduated, as well as a semester-long project for an independent study class.  I picked several different people who were murdered for their beliefs and arranged the quotes so they read as a sort of narrative about standing up for what you believe in.  The idea more or less just came to me one night as I was about to fall asleep, but it also served as good way to work on my portraits.  This was the first book I've ever made and also the first time I've printed on both sides of a page.  The whole project was a challenge and I can't even count the lessons I learned.  The next time I make a book, I'll certainly set it up differently from the start and hopefully cut the production time in half.  Pulling so many layers was also an invaluable experience because I feel like from start to finish my technique improved drastically.

Good thing Daniel Hughes didn't lose his sense of humor in the process and is willing to tackle the challenge anew in the future--hopefully he will share those details with us when he is good and ready.

Fernando’s comment is:

Something about glorifying both Che and Ghandi for "standing up for what they beleive in" in the same book just seems really fundamentally wrong...

Lovely illustration work though. I wish the content wasn't so upsetting.

Alphonse’s comment is:

I thought the same thing Fernando. This is a great looking little book, but the content is questionable.

Tiago Morena’s comment is:

Amazing work: great theme, beautiful illustrations and great silkscreen printing. Love the detail of stitching rather than stapling.

Congrats!

Nicole Marie’s comment is:

Lovely, illustrations and type work so nicely together.

Not all icons of change are necessarily ones that everyone needs to agree on. The point being that they were catalyst to a greater 'revolution'.

Nice little idea but the caricatures are too crude. Sometimes they seem to have so little bearing on the original appearances that they may come across as purely arbitrary. While Gandhi was identifiable, Che and Martin Luther King were hard to guess. But I guess, it was not meant to be a "guess-the-celebrity" type workbook. So it works at that level.
