How to get students excited about school? One way is to start with a solid philosophy and pair it with good and engaging design.

The Loyola University Maryland School of Education views teaching not just as a career path but as a life calling. Our challenge was to create a printed piece that spoke to potential students in that same voice. We also realized that because the school is new to Loyola University Maryland (it was officially dedicated in October 2009) there wouldn't be a ton of established assets. In order to translate this multifaceted idea of education as a calling we used simple, inspiring design to create a School of Education manifesto — adding vibrant color saturation on uncoated paper, the booklet is textural and tactile. We wanted it to feel comfortable in the hand of the reader.

It is a bit hard to tell from the image, but the cover required a bit of knowledge and imagination to achieve the perfect look.

To achieve the overprint above the metallic PMS on the cover we used UV inks in conjunction with inter-deck UV curing technology instead of traditional-process screens and blends.

drew Kora’s comment is:

Very nice. I would love to know about the behind-the-scenes process of designing this and getting it approved by the school. Having been a designer for a University, I remember how tough it was to get conceptual / typographic design like this past deans and administrators who want to see PHOTOS PHOTOS PHOTOS. Maybe things are different over there at Loyola.

This is truly stunning. Kudos to the design team.

Well done! There have been a couple really great books on here lately that definitely get it right. This is one of them, for sure.

Fantastic color, great use of type. I love the Be The Future spread.

Cheers!

Take a look at the other work that 160over90 has done for Loyola. They must have some great design aficionados in decision positions at Loyola.

Jim Walls’s comment is:

Thanks for all of the great comments.

Drew - Selling this brochure through to Loyola came at the tail end of a much larger branding process that involved the establishment of an overarching strategy and conceptual direction. Because of all that up-front table setting, clients are rarely surprised when they see an execution like this within the brand, especially since our process also gives them very early input into the design and copy direction on individual pieces.
