Packaging music, like many challenges presented to a designer, is often open to interpretation. Walrus & Eggman received a rather unusual set of ideas to work from as offered by the band Orthodox as they tackled their third album.

This is a very special project because we were huge fans of this band before they did contact us. And it was a pretty difficult one because there were a lot of concepts behind. They just told us about masonery, the search of light and wisdom, the myth of Moby Dick, ancient gods of the south of Spain, Beethoven, Coltrane… really challenging.

To make thing worse, we found out that everything started to circle round the number 3: third album, 3 band members, an old celtic symbol including 3 rays of light and wisdom.. and a lot more we can’t remember. So it was not easy to put it all together, even when the first choice of front cover was a painting of Soroya. Finally we thought about making something like an old book, a forbidden one, kind of secret, profane… And this was the result.

I do think the success of this design lies in the details, those hidden treasures that can only be found by quietly pursuing their existence.
