Indianapolis Early Music recently underwent a brand overhaul courtesy of CODO Design, as they strived to appeal to a younger and culture hungry community of the city. Providing them with world-class concerts was not enough, they needed to come across as urbane and contemporary, sophisticated and approachable.
For the art direction, we took cues from the likes of the London Jazz Festival and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As with any non-profit organization, budget limitations were a big concern. We wanted to create something that was cost-effective but still looked great.
I was actually worried about getting the overprint to look right, as I’d never done a piece quite like this before, but thankfully we have a comfortable relationship with the printer—they took one look at my mockup and nailed it. I’m really proud of the result, because it proves that you can create something outstanding without breaking the bank. You can make something really attractive by building cost-saving production measures into the design of the piece. This is definitely a time of doing more with less.
Overprinting is one of those design tricks that can look awesome, or go terribly terribly wrong. Of course, if you use hot pink your odds are on the good side.
