Greg Eckler was attracted to the statement Design like you give a damn, at a time when he has been focused on making and creating things that have positive reinforcement. He started by creating a poster with custom lettering using the phrase Design like you give a damn but eventually thought: what about everyone else? At this point, the project evolved into a personalized motivational poster where each person can add what they give a damn about in the area above the text, and then, well, give a damn about it.

But how large should giving a damn be?

My biggest challenge with this project was that my silkscreen press is small and I really wanted to make this an 18 × 24-inch poster. So to overcome it I made two screens one for the upper part and one solely dedicated to the text at the bottom. Also, the addition of the text came later in the poster’s evolution since I felt that my initial lettering was just floating in space. Inspired by the work of Jason Munn [of The Small Stakes] I thought that the addition of some text would balance the composition and also help push the positive side of the message. Plus the text helps you realize I’m not being sarcastic.

One tip for people who do screen printing: those Axe hair product jars are awesome for storing ink. If you are not a user of these products and do printing, find someone who uses them and ask if you can have the empty container when they are done.

Looks like Greg gives a damn about good printing as well.
