Since 1999 the United States Postal Service has been issuing the Nature of America stamp series, illustrated by John D. Dawson but 2010 is the last year of the series and the USPS worked with Journey Group to create a collector’s edition:
After twelve years of issuing stamps celebrating diverse ecosystems in the United States, the U.S. Postal Service wanted a limited edition product to commemorate the final year of the Nature of America stamp series. The piece needed to successfully archive and preserve all twelve stamp panes as well as highlight the process behind making the entire series. We wanted the design to be elegant and timeless, while subtle enough not to take away attention away from the already beautiful stamp artwork. The result was a foil stamped collector’s box to hold twelve stamp panes and stamp folders, a booklet, and an autographed certificate. Each stamp folder drew out artistic elements of its corresponding stamp pane. The booklet included an interview with the art director and artist of the 12-year series, plus developmental sketches printed on translucent sheets.
I’m not into stamps. I mean, I appreciate them, but I just like to lick them and place them on envelopes so that they get stuff from here to there. But if I were into stamps and was a collector, this box would have me howling like a wolf in the Sonoran Desert. Or something. The box is chunky and bold but with the silver foil stamp it has a nice air of sophistication. The book and folders serve as simple and bold vessels for the great illustration work of Dawson.
