While most design firms have understated typographic identities, Chicago-based Robot, Monster & Ghost Co. has, as its name implies, a robot, a monster, and a ghost as its identity elements. Respectively named Cilantrobot, Kibbles, and Roux. For this promotional packet, Roux the ghost gets the star treatment with a set of business cards, a glow in the dark button — which I tried to photograph to no avail — and a lovely notebook made out of the make-ready sheets. (Note to self: start asking printers to save us those sheets, even to use as wrapping paper). The result is a tight little promotional with tons of personality and tactility in a cute, er, I mean scary, canvas bag.

The purpose of the piece was to basically make noise, get our name in front of people and show off our quirk. We had the opportunity to crash (with the host’s blessing and support) a front-end design conference, so we wanted to make as big of a splash as possible. The concept is a set of calling cards for Roux, the ghost in the Robot, Monster & Ghost Company. Each mascot has a thoroughly documented background that we pull from when writing stories and promotions. The lapel pin (a button) and notebook are part and parcel for being appropriately fashionable while deceased.

The letterpress was very straight forward since it was only one color. We’d planned to gocco the envelopes and various other pieces with a much simpler icon, but after seeing the awesome makeready sheets, decided to use these for the designs of the envelopes. The process patterns were so well received (internally and by everyone who received the package) that they have become an integral part of our overall branding. We made about 60 prints using these patterns in random ways and sold them to fans of the company. The profits contributed to a second gocco printer and two tattoos.
