The elusive LP package, the one we grew up loving, admiring, and collecting. More often than not a designer can clearly name the one cover that hooked him, the one that made him or her chose design over any other career path. Yet, more often than not, the aforementioned designer does not get a chance to design an LP cover in our digital world. Charlie Wagers is one of the lucky ones.
In an industry where digital files are over-taking physical media, this record label has a reputation for producing elaborate, interesting, limited-edition pressings of their records. For this package we decided to use a Die-Cut Outer Jacket, with full-color interior sleeves to house the record. The clear protective poly-bags have the band’s name printed directly on them across the center. There are different color variations, all extremely limited, some as small as editions of 100 copies.
The main challenge of this project was making sure the die-cuts lined up. The way that all of the circle are placed, it was very intricate the way they all needed to line up. Luckily Matt at Pirates Press is a friend, and a gem to work with. He made this process move very smoothly.
Originally we wanted to do a really intricate die-cut, but this ended up being outside of the price range for the release. So instead we were able to print on sleeves that had a pre-existing die. Again, Matt was great, and assisted in giving some pointers on how to make everything work.
