We’ve featured Andy Smith before and that’s not just because his illustration style is funny and endearing but because he gets his hands inky (and dirty we assume) by printing his little promo booklets himself. I don’t know how he does it, but he infuses so much color and vibrancy into the prints that the color looks as if it was colored paper.

I wanted to produce a piece of work that would showcase some of the animal characters that I have created. I think they have human characteristics and so I wrote out of a list of bodily complaints and statements that a human might say. I then drew the animals and tried to make some reference to each complaint. Finally the animals and complaints were mixed up so that the type and image does not correspond.

He makes it look effortless but the 6-week production time and the quote below show the joys of DIY printing.

The biggest challenge was silkscreening it. Sometimes it just doesn’t go right!
