While the real star of this self-promotional poster created by Kihei, Hawaii-based design Tim Parsons is the ridiculously good-looking ambigram that spells Aloha in one orientation and Mahalo in the other, the design and printing helps it stand out quite nicely knocked out of a deep orange and set against a great, exaggerated-halftone image.
Aloha and Mahalo are two Hawaiian words with a deep meaning. I noticed that they had a visually similar structure and thought that they’d make a perfect ambigram.
Aloha
Love — Affection — Compassion — Mercy — Sympathy — Pity — Kindness — Sentiment — Grace — Charity — Greeting
Mahalo
Thanks — Gratitude — To Thank — Thank You Very Much — Compliment
Looks can be deceiving, it was a lot harder than I thought. Below you can see some of the original sketches and in-progress screen printing. More detail can be found here.
