Salem, Ohio-based letterpress shop Cranky Pressman worked with the Brooklyn-based Parliament of Owls to create a promotion that introduces Cranky Pressman’s new line of twelve different standard house die shapes that customers can design around and not worry about the added cost of custom dies. Together, they came up with the best spokespeople: “The senior citizens of beach community living — The Coasters! Contained with a belly band the set of four coasters illustrates the profiles of the four Coasters, Edna, Cranky, Mr. Snogglebaum, and Adelaide & Mr. Pistachio. Wonderfully and quirkily illustrated by Parliament of Owls and accompanied by their likes and dislikes, these coasters are like Playboy centerfolds, except not very hot. But the printing is hot and the pulp board material is something you would enjoy on a long walk on the beach.

We had worked with the ladies at the Parliament of Owls before so were familiar with their intricately detailed style which requires rather precise letterpress production. Everyone worked together during the design phase to achieve the ideal line weights, registration details and overlapping ink color combination. The choice of colors was quite interesting because in theory we were using orange and blue but wanted to make sure we had a nice clean green where the two ink colors overlapped. In the end we decided on PMS 142 because it was about the only color you could look at and say it was orange but was light enough it would print like a yellow.
