January is a good time to talk about calendars. I know that it has been a topic around here seeing how we got 6 different ones over Xmas—interestingly two of those were customized and hand made by family members. But I have to say that family birthdays and important dates are not quite as interesting as what Alex Griendling has to offer in his vertical calendar.
After watching La jetée, I began thinking about how cool it would be to see the history of (fictional) time travel play out on a timeline. Unfortunately, I found no such timeline, so I decided to make it myself. I ultimately decided on designing a calendar to hold this information, as it made sense to mesh the two methods of time-keeping. Simultaneously watching a long span of time (the timeline) play out over a short period (12 months) was an idea that immediately appealed to me.
Being the first project I’ve gotten professionally printed, I learned tons. The intricacies of paper weight, wire-o binding limitations, print preparation, all that stuff. I also learned how awesome and helpful the right printers can be.
