I can relate to what Derek Gabryszak is doing with his project Understate. I’m constantly pulling from culture and trying to digest and regurgitate something that seems clear, if only in its intention. The attraction to isolating these moments is attempting to make them timeless. Sometimes things you’d like to remember and hold on to pass by you like a missed bus. Better write them down… and then make cool prints out of them.
This piece started as an illustration for an on-going type project I have called Understate. Understate started as a nameless personal project when I moved to New York, to keep my creative wheels spinning and doing quick type drawings, mostly of out-of-context phrases or sentences picked from every day life; nonsense. After I filled up several little books of the illustrations, I decided to start making them as part of a more formal collection. And now called Understate, I draw type. Phrases, sayings, single words…whatever catches my attention.
All of the pieces are up here, this particular one graduated from just another drawing (most pieces are offered only as digital prints) into a proper screen-printed piece. It’s a line from Annie Hall. I intend to do more Woody Allen inspired lines, he’s the greatest weirdo ever.
I learned that screen printing can, at times, be very easy (painless). The prints I had done before this were VERY difficult. It was a client job, and what could go wrong, did go wrong. Registration errors, color trouble, screen problems… the list goes on.
So after such a difficult print, that took three days longer than it should have, I decided to do something as simple as I could, as fast as I could. This is a one color print, that had me in and out of the studio in less than 2 hours. Screen printing… ahh, the trials and tribulations.
