Linked heavily last month, including on our own Quipsologies, Shelby White’s “Typefaces of the World” has gone from viral to print in less than a month, courtesy of the quick folks at Scribble on Anything — who also brought us the Periodic Table of Typefaces and “So you need a typeface” posters, mastering the art of printing on delicious black paper.
The biggest challenge was printing white ink on uncoated black paper. Its was a beast to get it just right. Sure we could have done it on white stock but where’s the challenge in that? We ended up doing 2 hits of silver then overprint two hits of white in line, then a dry trap on for the two PMS colors. The printer Cereus Graphics went the extra mile (and then some) on this project. They ended up throwing in the dry trap at no cost just to make it perfect. If you ever need a print job done right these are the guys. They ran the project like it was their design and they didn’t stop until it was right!
Shelby’s awesome infographic comes to life rather splendidly thanks to the printing: double-hit of silver ink on the type names and a base of white for the blue and orange PMS. The registration on the sample I got is pitch-perfect. Even my macro close-ups didn’t reveal anything. Big ups to the full team: designer, printer, and producer/distributor (Scribble snatches cool poster faster than the Weinsteins can snatch the latest Philip Seymour Hoffman flick at Sundance).
