Designing ephemera for exhibitions is tricky. It’s difficult to solidify a specific graphic that embodies an entire show. These are lovely because they are consistently inconsistent. No two are alike, similarly to the artwork which they’re cataloging. Sometimes it’s better to let go and let the work be what it wants to be.
We wanted to make 1,550 unique catalogue covers by Iris Printing them with a mix of gold (the royalty) and blue (same PMS as the blue in the Swedish flag). At the exhibition all 1,550 books were available for the visitors to bring home with them. A visitor could choose the catalogue that attracted him or her the most.
Since this was the second time we printed with the Iris technique we learned how colors mix different with different kinds of paper. With uncoated, as in this project, the colors stuck more to the place where it had been put in place. We also found out that we could add color in the middle of the printing process while the machine was moving. This made the print work more like realtime painting which was very exciting and also made a better aesthetic result.
