With a cool name like A Hundred Monkeys, the Mill Valley, CA-based naming company shouldn’t have a hard time doing cool promotional materials. Pair them with designer Mikey Burton and you got a winning combination. Or, at least in this particular case, a letterpress kit to make your very own “dive-bombing monkey”. The illustration is quirky and the big floods of letterpressed color add to the overall effect. Now we just need a hundred of these bad boys to start a Planet of the Apes-type revolution.

There aren’t a lot of people sending out cool things in the mail anymore. We think it’s important to carry on this tradition. We send these out to friends, family and clients (the good ones) as a way to say hi. We got a chance to work with Mikey Burton on our latest print and we jumped at the opportunity. We’ve been a big fan of his work for a while. We gave him the line “First Class Troublemakers,” and he came up with the idea of a dive-bombing monkey. After going back and forth on the idea a bit, we loved where we ended up. It’s not the most aerodynamic of creatures, but neither are monkeys. We’re actually working on an updated version with better range.

The die cut proved to be a little difficult. We wanted to do it in a way which would allow it to function both as a plane and a poster. We figured it out, but it’s a little delicate as a poster. Some of the bigger pieces (wings, body) fall out if you bend the print too much.
