Valentine’s day has always been and will always be kind of a ridiculous phenomenon. I’ll celebrate. It’s a good excuse to throw away cash on a nice meal. But other than that, what’s left behind are all the days before and all the days after. This gesture is something to be kept and used and remembered; not merely consumed. It’s a cute project.
Valentine’s Day was fast approaching and I found myself without a gift for my girlfriend Rubie. She mentioned to me some time before that how much she wanted a night light. Lately she’s been having trouble sleeping and I wanted something to help comfort her. I had already planned on designing her a print, so I thought it would be cool to incorporate the two ideas. Every night when she switches the lights off to fall asleep, she looks over to her gift and smiles, knowing I’ll love her all night, day, always.
The production costs were quite expensive, so the only way to realize this project was with the intention to sell them online. It even spurred the creation of my online shop: Kryptonite Prints & Apparel. The prints can be purchased here for a very reasonable $25 each. All proceeds go towards the engagement ring fund :)
This project was very experimental. We didn’t know if the glow in the dark ink would be visible enough over the metallic, and if the two overlapping graphics would cause legibility issues. Fortunately, Mama’s Sauce did a great job. They balanced the piece perfectly, using two passes of glow in the dark ink so the glow was bright enough while the “Night” graphic was only barely visible during the day.
