They call it synesthesia when stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory pathway. Like patterns being translated into beats and vice versa. I love the dynamism of this portfolio, it seems very cohesive. It’s also all done DIY with an inkjet printer and having seen this in person it’s very hard to tell it wasn’t done offset.
I love pattern and repetition. It has been a constant theme in my work. So when I needed to create a self-promo to potential employers, I knew that would be my theme. I found this amazing site and saw a correlation between my sketchbook and many of the designs for these old album covers. In “Art of the Beat” I write, “Patterns are the drum beat. They are the most basic form of order. Boom Boom Dum Clash! But you can’t stop with just a simple beat. Because with multiple beats and melodies, you can tell a story. One of my mentors, Brent Funderburk told me “You must never stop telling the bigger story.” Bring order out of chaos through telling our bigger story.”
In Art of the Beat, I include a cover letter, brief explanation of the work, and my resume at the back. The only words inside the book are “BOOM BOOM DUM CLASH”.
It took me a while to figure out the weights of paper. I wanted it to just feel right. I initially used all cover weight but it was just too thick and awkward. Eventually I made two foldouts for the cover and back and middle spread, and then used text for the other three pages. Also I had trouble making everything line up front and back (because I was just printing this on my epson and that usually doesn’t work out like you want it to!) so I used the belly band to put my title, and the other side is just pattern.
