An object speaks of its function but it is not bound to one. I whole-heartedly believe that even if an item was made for a specific application, the sum of its parts can add up to be something more. There’s always another way to do things, this is a great example of how.
I had published several issue of Team Evil magazine (A5, stapled) and was looking for a way to present the magazine in a more original format.
I had always liked the idea of personalised mix tapes and when I found a local wholesaler that stocked the plastic cases for pennies I thought a Cassette Tape Magazine would be a cool + economical way to create a mini magazine.
Or to put it another way, I remembered making mix tapes for girls when I was a little kid and I figured other people had the same experience and could relate. The whole ‘Team Evil Loves You Forever’ bit was a concept that helped tie the project together.
This was supposed to be a quick / cheap / fun project but that didn’t exactly work out as planned. Because of the unique printing requirements, i.e. the length of the fold out, we had to get a custom print job and that totally blew out the cost. The folding was another nightmare - in the end I threw some extra money at the printers who got people in to hand fold the concertina inlay over a weekend.
