If folk rock is your ace in the hole, the Avett Brothers have it in spades. This silkscreen poster by Brian “Doc” Reed really captures the home-grown appeal of the Avetts. The cool blues and slightly warmer greens combine well to give the illustration a soothing earthy feel. The vertical type treatment is a nice touch that reads equally well when the poster is rotated 180 degrees. The choice of Hellenic Wide also helps with the readability of the vertical type.
Obviously the job of a gig poster is to catch the eye of viewers/passers-by and to inform them about an event. So looking cool is just in the DNA of a gig poster.
Since LP art has been reduced to CD art, which is now often reduced to digital thumbnails viewed as iTunes album art, much of the visual connection between an artist and consumers has been lost. Well-designed posters can fill this void. For all of those reasons, I wanted to create a poster with a clear concept that would appeal to fans of the Avett Brothers, as well as those who have never heard of them.
The concept of this poster was to create an image that spoke about the brothers being two different people, but with a common goal. Simply put, they are two sides of the same coin. The idea was to create the poster so it could hang either way and have the information read correctly. This element reinforces the idea that the band is a family unit. To me, the Avetts are kings, or aces in this case, of indie/folk music. Truly, the magic is in the music.
