This seems more like an invitation to a family reunion than a wedding(in a good way), but I guess the two are essentially the same thing. And when Texan families get together, we don’t speak english, we speak Barbecue. I love the gingham border and the nod to state fair ribbons, really makes this one a prize piece.
Our Client, Jessica Define is a designer with a shrewd eye for style. She was searching for a design that would appeal to both her and her husband to be, Steven. They both love classic Americana in the form of muscle cars, roadside signage, and mid-century architecture and design. Their more divergent interests included her love of fashion and his love of gangsta rap. It was of extreme importance that whatever we invented be appealing to both the bride and he groom.
One of the really great things about this project was that Jessica already had some fantastic ideas. She turned over a sizable folder of inspirational materials and clippings. In these were a folded newspaper broadside and piece of ribbon that she loved and was hoping to somehow integrate into the design. Both of which we did.
We decided to take an approach that touched on atomic age advertising, circus type broadsides, art deco, and just a hair of Texas attitude without being overtly any one particular style. We decided to pay homage to Steven’s love of rap by using metallic gold ink as one of the main colors. John hand drew all the illustrations we used throughout the pieces.
Production went smoothly (for a change!). One of the only real challenges faced was getting the letterpress printed items to match reasonably with the offset printed pieces.
