I’d never heard of this type of transfer before because I’m a computer-age baby, and things like this get thrown under the bus nowadays, unless you are a type nerd like me, and 99.9% of the people who look at this blog. Anyways, I’m always interested in learning about new ways to make marks, especially with physical type, and these seem like they’d be really satisfying to play with.

This project was originally intended as a gift for our top customers back in October of last year. We all love the old Letraset dry transfer letters and thought it would be something people would really be surprised and delighted to receive unsolicited in the mail. We focused on some of our favorite designs, but also made sure each was bold and simple enough to work in this medium.

We found only two printers who were still able to do this work, and even they don’t seem to have the process perfected. I guess there is not that much call for this kind of printing. So it took several months to get these produced, as the first couple of batches turned out to be too delicate, offsetting onto each other in shipping. But finally the printer got it dialed in and the finished product was shipped, only to get stuck in US customs for about a month.

Lesson: Allow more time for quirky, archaic print methods?
