My “little black book” is Facebook. Impersonal, rarely cozy, and never hand-written, my “Rolodex” simply cannot compare to 13 Wives’ intimate menu of protagonist coquettes and potent concoctions. Not only the name of this specialty cocktail bar, 13 wives is the fictional narrative of the 13 women who inspire each unique mix on the mixologist’s list. The menu was printed in-house on an inkjet printer, hand-assembled, and is handed to guests only by the bartender himself. What’s not to “Like”?
This is a small run project so we decided to do everything in house. Since this is supposedly someone’s rolodex, we hand wrote the entire book in order for this to look as true to life as possible. The challenge is we could not hand-write all 35 books since it would be too tedious and we had a deadline to meet. Solution: Hand-write one copy, scan then print and collate. So, we sort of set up a production line with a team making the faux leather cover, another to print, cut and collate the inside pages and then another to put everything together. It took us a course of roughly two weeks because we are a small team.
