Icco: Icons of Colombia distills Colombian culture into 50 tidy symbols with English descriptions. When a graphic designer states “these images define my country”, I’m inclined to listen, if only because no one else is saying it so sweetly. This piece reminds me of the power of design to shift perception—and promote mustaches. More about the project here (in Spanish).

After extensive studies and observation for more than three years of the national Identity, graphic designer Oscar Correa developed ICCO: Icons of Colombia, a graphic identity project that highlights the Colombian Icons (representations of the national people, values, goals, and the main events in the history of the country). It aims through the design of a contemporary iconographic system to alleviate any negative stereotypes of Colombia, and to develop a friendly and fun approach to the Colombian Culture. Icco: Icons of Colombia was designed to present a positive visual image worldwide of what it is to be a Colombian.
