What happens when good designers get offended by religious practices? The Church of Notm Ormon! Visual troublemaker Brian Singer went to extreme, beautiful lengths to make fun of the Mormon ritual of “baptism by proxy”, which is the baptism of a live person on behalf of a dead person, so the dead person can still enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Inappropriate dinner-table conversation aside, this certificate and envelope are exquisite to behold, as if God Himself designed them. Blasphemy!
The Church of Notm Ormon is a new religion, seeking to bolster their numbers through a process called “Baptism by Proxy”. This practice, which every major religion (except for one) frowns upon, involves baptizing the dead, via a proxy. Notm Ormon takes it one step further, by allowing baptisms of the living by proxy as well.
The big lesson on this project was in how certain foil colors react to certain papers. The imprint from an opaque metallic foil was clean and crisp, on both the envelope and the certificate, but shiny gold felt more appropriate for the subject matter, so we sacrificed some print quality for concept.
