Testing the waters with their first ever print publication, Design*Sponge certainly makes a splash. Ornamental typography and cool photography swish and swash, helping this newspaper find its place in the sun.
The goal was to create something playful enough for summer, and bold enough to support Design*Sponge’s first foray into print design. We worked closely with the fantastic D*S editors, for whom this project was a real labor of love. We were interested in establishing a visual connection between the medium of print and the summer theme without being heavy-handed. To that end, we restricted ourselves to using one color (black), and beautifully drawn typefaces to allow the photography to be the primary focus. Type and image overlap and shift to convey the ebb and flow that is always felt during the best summer months.
Despite the deceptive simplicity of newsprint, we learned to use our printer as a partner in the production process. The folks at Linco were an amazing resource for us when we hit some sizing and production issues, and we were thrilled with the end result.
