The cherry blossom of book design, this ephemeral, edible book’s beauty is in that in only lasts for a few reads— if you can make it that long.

Each year we design a chocolate inspired gift for the business relations of De Kwartiermakers and this year it had to be something with a real cradle-to-grave feel in it. And chocolate, of course. After 12 pages a die-cut holds the letters H, E and T; Dutch for ‘THE’. This word is integrated in the design of the pages that follow and tell a story that we wrote for the client about their 4 year existence. The book is very fragile and tactile and will most probably fall apart after a few ‘reads’. That makes it a real temporary book. A bookmark mentioned the dyes in the ink, further ingredients and a disclaimer that the book is not suitable for children as they will go completely hyper because of the ink.

The wafer paper printer did not have any experience with books and faced serious stock problems because of the quantity we needed. The edible ink gave strange color effects when applied on the ‘solid’ pages so more sweetener had to be added.
