Every page begs to be touched, moved, sniffed or scanned in Sappi’s latest volume of their annual design journal. Prepare to be mesmerized by fantastical foils, luscious lenticular effects, extreme embossing, and voluptuous varnishes. This book captures the imagination, then sets it free into the wild with enough production inspiration to feed the most starving of artists.

Project Description

826 National, a network of nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving youth literacy and writing, is pleased to announce that we've teamed up with Sappi Fine Paper on the 2012 edition of their annual design journal, The Standard #5. Each edition of The Standard focuses on a particular aspect of the printing and design process. This series is part of Sappi's continuing commitment to create unique and valuable educational resources for professionals in the print communications business.

This year’s edition of The Standard, titled “Special Effects,” contains gorgeous photos, illustrations, and typography aimed at showing designers how the creative use of special effects can make a printed piece dimensional, tactile, intriguing and sometimes interactive. The effects are inspired by the creative themes of the 826 storefronts-- from the Pirate Supply Store in San Francisco to the Museum of Unnatural History in Washington, D.C.

Production Lesson(s)

Most of [this project] has to do with print techniques that go beyond the page. But it's also opened up a whole new area because it also included Augmented Reality (AR) and QR codes, which are another way to expand the experience of working with print.”
