Project Description

This project was meant to be both a commemorative and promotional poster for Ellen Lupton's March 31, 2012 visit to speak for AIGA Houston. I was inspired by old paper cut silhouette portraits (my grandparents had these in their home, and I always liked them).

This was my first attempt at a letterpress piece, and it was a little scary. At every stage of the design process, I had to be mindful of the intended medium—working in solids and limiting myself to one color at first, then introducing the second for contrast. I tried to avoid tying myself to any visual elements I would have to retool later, so I kept the design as basic as possible until the overall composition was in place. My (limited) experience with silkscreening came in handy here, though I was warned by the pressman that the amount of coverage necessary for the design may be problematic. In the end, however, the finished piece came out better than I'd hoped for, and I can't wait to find an excuse to make a second attempt

Production Lesson(s)

These were a challenge to print due to the enormous fill required on both plates. The posters were run on both a Challenge 15MA proof press and Chandler and Price 12×18 Craftsman. The blue plate required reinking every two prints. Due to the amount of coverage on the red plate we (Workhorse Printmakers) decided to break the sponsor's names at the bottom off onto a separate plate to maintain clean, light inking. Overall we were thrilled with the final piece and happy to be able to donate our time to AIGA Houston. ”
