Project Description

GT Walsheim is a geometric sans-serif family inspired by the work of Swiss poster artist Otto Baumberger. The hand-painted typography on his lithography-printed posters had some very unique traits. Baumberger himself stated that he never had an education in typography, which explains some of the more unusual aspects of his work. Revisited and modernized, GT Walsheim makes those forms useful to today's designers.

Lithography ABC is a series of 26 risoprinted postcards inspired by old lithography posters. Each postcard uses one letter from GT Walsheim. Together, they spell out the ABC.

Production Lesson(s)

What started as a fun little idea to promote our typeface GT Walsheim turned into quite a large project once production started. Sourcing the designs from 16 different designers, preparing them for the Risograph, cutting the paper sheets down to size, cutting the printed sheets down to postcard size, and so on.

It was a valuable lesson of how expensive self-made can still be once you factor in the workload, but given that we had so many friends helping us along the way and seeing the end result, it was well worth it and a lot of fun.”
