Keeping things simple inside with straightforward CMYK offset printing, I wanted the cover to have a special twist. Since I had made a paper cutout version of the FPO (blog) logo to use as the FPO Awards logo and really liked how it looked big I wanted to translate that to the cover, so the paper logo wraps around from the back cover through the spine and into the cover. But not only did I want you to see it, I wanted you to feel it. With a spot UV sandpaper varnish against a satin-ish paper stock, the paper logo feels like, well, paper. Since you can’t touch it through our site, I’ve made a little video where you can hear it.

Project Description

The FPO Awards is a judged competition organized by UnderConsideration, celebrating the best print work from around the world during 2011-12. The FPO Awards reward the most successful combinations of design and print production. A panel of five judges convened in Austin, TX on July 6, 2012 to collectively select the 96 winning entries included in this book.

Production Lesson(s)

Always keep paper manufacturer and printer promos. They have great examples and very detailed production specifications that help you prepare your own print specs. Without Sappi's The Standard 3: Varnishes and Coatings (from 2009!) I wouldn't have been able to confidently specify the sandpaper varnish. And by "specify" I mean tear the sheet out and ship it to China with a note that says "I want this".”
