When the clients passed on this Dieter Rams calendar concept Edwin Carter knew he couldn’t let it go to waste. So he increased the size from desk pad to poster sized, expanded the list of holidays to be more inclusive, and repurposed the project to function as quite a nice self-promotional piece.

Project Description

A large, A0 sized, year long wall calendar inspired by the quote "Good design is as little design as possible" & Dieter Rams

Production Lesson(s)

In June of 2012, I was approached by the design department of the MoMA Design Store and asked to design a calendar desk pad. Giving them six concepts, I knew five of them would be rejected. One design in particular I loved—the design based on Dieter Rams' quote. When that design was rejected, I felt disappointed, but I knew I didn't want it to be stored on my hard drive, never seeing the day it would be produced. So, I made some changes to it—the size and listing of holidays—adjusted some of the layout, and now it's a year long wall calendar. When I made the decision to produce this calendar myself, I wanted to have a calendar the was usable—it lists Federal Holidays—but at the same time, I wanted a calendar that featured a more inclusive list of holidays.”
