Yep, as you may have heard, Woody at 100 won the Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition package. Inside the 150-page book, photos, artwork, lyrics, and artifacts help give context to the 57 songs on three CDs and show the breadth of Woody’s creative output. Bonus at the bottom of the post: video clip of Visual Dialogue’s Fritz Klaetke accepting his Grammy after running down from the nosebleed section.

Project Description

Pretty much everyone knows Woody Guthrie and his iconic songs such as “This Land is Your Land.” But for this new boxed set, Folkways wanted to paint a more complete picture of Guthrie. We used a never-before-seen photo of Woody at life size on the 12" x 12" cover to represent the direct nature of his music. Inside the 150-page book, photos, artwork, lyrics, and artifacts help give context to the 57 songs on 3 CDs and show the breadth of Woody’s creative output.

Production Lesson(s)

Of course it was a huge undertaking going through the all the archival materials—photos, Woody's artwork, original lyrics, letters, album covers, albums, metal masters, logbooks, notes, and other ephemera. And it took quite a while to create clipping paths for all those objects (which we hadn't budgeted). But in the end it was worth it to help bring the book to life.”
