Booklet: Newspaper Club
Makeready and test sheets:
Rohner Letterpess, Classic Color, Doe Eyed

There are four stories to UC.Quarterly: 1) The design and layout of the booklet, which is a constant amount of work throughout 3 months by asking for images and then placing them. 2) Talking printers into providing us with makeready or test sheets that they were going to throw away for recycling so that we could give them a new life by using them as our covers — we deeply thank Rohner Letterpress, Classic Color, and Doe Eyed for playing along with us based on theory.3) Getting the file nice and neat as a PDF for Newspaper Club to print as a “Mini”, which is one of their new offerings. 4) And, finally, a lot of DIY by rubber-stamping each cover with our logo and then hand-assembling all the newspapers and covers with a rubber band. Lots of work but lots of fun too.

Project Description

A publication of UnderConsideration, printed quarterly, with a summary of the most interesting, relevant, and simply fun-to-see projects published each quarter across its network of blogs.

Production Lesson(s)

Dude. So many:
1. Finding the right ink to print on the large variety of papers was a pain, we ended up making fusions of rubber stamp inks and linoleum print paint.
2. Inking the rubber stamp the traditional way didn't work because it was a large stamp and was not inking properly; we had to use a roller to put the ink on the stamp. We cut the wood handle off the stamp and used it more like an engraving plate belly up.
3. The makeready sheets were not the right width because we didn't calculate the 'creep' that would happen to 48 pages saddle-stitched, so we had to manually trim about an eighth of an inch of each newspaper. Which was good, because the newspapers weren't fully squared because newsprint is so wobbly so it wasn't a perfect rectangle.
4. The rubber bands were a little tight, so on lighter cover stocks they would crush the paper but we found that if we gave them a good stretch they would loosen up. Quite a workout.”
