Lead Image

The experimentation and creative process for this impressive series of letterpress broadsheets carried on beyond the digital design phase and into the printing production phase of the project, during which Kevin Rudynski tried various plate sequences to get the desired effects. The resulting colors and compositions have chaotic, punk, postmodern, attention-grabbing qualities reminiscent of lost generation artwork from between WWI and WWII, and punk creations from the 1980s-90s.

Project Description

This broadside series is an exploration of experimental typography using text excerpts from a wide variety of personally significant sources including song lyrics, court testimony records, and overused everyday jargon. The texts are composed to challenge the viewer into an active engagement with the text/image combinations and to consider the relationship between the images and texts. This series is also a technical foray into the rich possibilities of digital to letterpress printmaking, and and an experimental exploration printing plate order, color, and texture.

Production Lesson(s)

The ideas for this broadside series are text-based and were visually developed on the computer. However as the series progressed, I found myself experimenting more at the press side with plate and color order--extending the creative process well into the printing phase. Printing became more than just a matter of reproducing the digital design. Consequently, this project became more experimental and exciting in ways I didn't initially imagine. I am reminded of the experimental print work by H.N. Werkman and look forward to applying the lessons of this series into my future work.”
