Project Description

We're both designers and when we got engaged I knew we'd be going all out with the printed elements for our wedding. The tricky part was blending both of our design sensibilities. I priced out a few letterpress shops but with such a small number of invitations having to go out, and wanting to hand paint each one, it made more sense to print them ourselves. We started by designing the invitations and having plates made by Boxcar Press, then  painted each invitation and RSVP card with acrylic washes. We purchased a Lifestyle Crafts press with their letterpress kit to do the printing and it was very successful. We had 3 plates for the invitation to run through the press, and one for the RSVP card. We made inserts inviting people to a post-wedding brunch with our inkjet printer, and typeset each envelope and printed them through the inkjet as well. We packaged the invitations with a hand-punched band made with a Martha Stewart punch.

Production Lesson(s)

We were lucky to both have prior printing experience so the process went pretty smoothly. We did upgrade the brayer the press came with, and we bought a larger inking plate as well. The biggest tip we have are to make sure the ink is the right consistency. One of our tubes was too thin and was difficult to work with at first. Also, clean your plates and brayer every 8-10 prints.”
