AIGA Chicago Mentor Program produced “design Is” to help high school students understand what design is and what the powers of design could achieve. Since most designers I have talked to had no idea what design was when they were in high school, it is nice to see designers working together to educate young people about the potential career path and outlet for creativity.

Project Description

Through the AIGA Chicago Mentor Program, a group of Chicago based designers and researchers collaborated to design a newsprint to inspire and educate Chicago high school students about the power, potential and possibilities of design. We designed a newsprint piece where we illustrated and visualized 11 words that we felt best communicated and exemplified the meaning of design. The "Design Is" newsprint was distributed to high school students at the 2013 Chicago Design Youth Forum hosted by Project Osmosis.

Production Lesson(s)

When printing this project, we wanted to maintain the electric boldness of the colors in our designs. The proof was printed on regular newsprint paper and the colors turned out great. Our printer kindly upgraded our paper to 92 bright and a heavier 50lb stock to bring out the colors even more. We were really happy with the final result.”
